PDF Portfolios in Manufacturing Companies
PDF Portfolio in Manufacturing?
As many of you may know, there is a clear trend in manufacturing to increase the use 3D design data, not just within engineering and manufacturing functions, but across the enterprise. However, sharing 3D data, especially outside of technical areas and with suppliers, has been a challenge. 3D data is almost always accompanied by 2D data, often coming from numerous sources and in involving numerous formats. We at Adobe have long recognized the need to ensure interoperability while simultaneously helping customers reduce the number of systems necessary to share data with customers or suppliers. Adobe also recognizes the importance of outstanding presentation and ease of use. How many emails have you gotten that look like this? (Hint: Look at all of the attachments you get to open… nice!)

Not only does the PDF Portfolio solve this problem, it is still possible to include multiple file formats where they are needed. So let’s get to it? click below to read on.
The Portfolio Explained
Okay, so what if that email I showed you had looked like this?

Much better? Of course it is. Now, maybe you are thinking “so he’s just created a single PDF? what’s the big deal. Well, let me explain what the big deal is
Suppose when you opened the attachment, you saw this:

As you will see, this is intended to be part of an RFQ process. Lets click on “get started” and see what happens.
You may need to look really closely to see, but there are Word, SWF, PPT and PDF files (some with 3D content) “embedded” in this PDF. In the past, we offered something call a PDF package, which converted all of the files to PDF, and you can still work that way with Portfolios, but there are now several options. This is one of the formats, by the way, that is included with Acrobat Pro Extended. The various files are arranged and selectable in carrousel fashion. Let’s select the PPT file and see what happens:

After a couple of clicks, here is what happened. I opened the PowerPoint file. Of course, I needed to have MS Powerpoint on my laptop, but depending upon the workflow and permissions, I could even make changes to the file and save back to the Portfolio. And look at this:

While the PPT file was open, it was labeled as open in the portfolio. So in short, that is what a portfolio is. Imagine how portfolios can address business challenges you may be having. The sourcing process is just one great example of where you may be able to use them. Oh yes, did I mention that I opened this in the Adobe Reader? Pretty cool I think!

OSCON day 3: Reflections on OSCON 2008
Today was the last day of OSCON and I’m in the mood to think about the conference and share some of my random observations that didn’t make it into any of my other blog posts.
First up is a comment that Brian Aker of MySQL fame made during the “Tim O’Reilly Interviews Monty Widenius & Brian Aker” interview:
microsoft is irrelevant. … we’re more worried about apple.
Woah. That’s a tall statement! One that resonates with me since just a few weeks ago I realized that my life is now fully free of Microsoft. And I used to be a full time Win32 programmer 10 years ago. While Microsoft may not be fully irrelevant in all scopes, a comment like this shows that the open source movement has made an amazing amount of progress in the last 10 years. Consumers have a lot more operating choices today than they did 10 years ago. And to think that Apple had been written off for dead — now they’re back and they’re feared!

And while we’re on the topic of Microsoft’s relevance, Thorsten von Eicken in his “Scale into the Cloud with Open Source” presentation said:
inflexible licensing on behalf of vendors has caused most of the software running in the cloud to be charitable source software.
(The “cloud” in this context is Amazon’s EC2 for which his company provides services). This is a huge deal! We’re talking about closed source software vendors shutting themselves out by not quickly providing flexible licenses that can deal with the rapid deployment of servers to a cloud. And even when they do provide flexible licenses, what will the costs be of handling a massive load spike of your services running in the cloud? You may have to watch out for more than just your bandwidth costs during a load spike — what could the operating system licensing costs do to your company? Go open source software! This keeps getting better and better!

In computer and telecommunications networks, presence information is a status indicator that conveys ability and willingness of a potential communication partner - for example a user to communicate. A user’s client provides presence information (presence state) via a network connection to a presence service, which is stored in what constitutes his personal availability record (called a presentity) and can be made available for distribution to other users (called watchers) to convey his availability for communication.Presence state · MPOP and presence by … · Privacy concerns

Finally some comments about OSCON itself. Besides having a blast once again and meeting many interesting new people, the sessions all engaged me fully. Not even once did a speaker fail to capture my attention throughout the whole session. The selection of topics was also spot on — many of the things that are on my personal radar were covered. And the gender balance had never been better at an OSCON! I was pleased to see many more women present at OSCON — I suspect that Danese Cooper and Allison Randal may have had something to do with that. Regardless of who deserves the credit, please continue to encourage more women to attend!
That’s it for me. I have to run off to catch my plane back to California. Thanks for the excellent conference and thanks for having my on the Radar!

Voluntown: Town still fighting to help Girard family

About 75 friends and neighbors crowded into the Voluntown Fire Station on Tuesday night to find out how to help the Girard family. Many wound up crying, as they watched a video clip of Lucas Girard, 11, describe losing his father and brother at Green Falls Pond.Lucas struggled to complete his sentences, covering his face and choking on tears. He told the camera how the family went to the pond in pairs. Then his sister, Hannah, started screaming. His brother started yelling, ‘Dad, Dad!’ “I just started to pray and yell ‘help.’ And no one was answering…” Lucas said. Two friars from the Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate in Griswold filmed six hours with the family, and cut it down to an hour and a half, then sent it to Extreme Home Makeover Home Edition” July 15. The ABC program weekly rehabilitates homes of families who have fallen on hard times, often under wrenching circumstances.Friar Didacus Cortes said the project was draining, but an act of charity, and the family wept during some of the filming.“At one point, I shut if off,” Cortes said. “But (Lucas Girard’s mother) Carol said, ‘We need to talk about it.”Thomas Girard, 45, and his son, Marc Girard, 17, died in a swimming accident June 30 at the pond in Pachaug State Forest in Voluntown. Family friend Johanna Kotecki said it was the worst in a series of blows to a family with few places to turn. Fire burned the Girards’ Voluntown home last year, and later a bank started foreclosure proceedings on their property.More than 75 people attended an informational meeting on the status of the Girard family’s needs at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. Kotecki said a fund for the family had reached about $20,000 as of a couple of days ago. More than 50 people offered their names and phone numbers to help in any way they could; cooking, building, carpentry, fundraising.David Collier, an attorney working on the foreclosure issue, said he made an offer of $23,000 to Mortgage Services in Arvin, Calif., to try to settle the house debt, and the offer is traveling upward in the company. The family owes $140,000 on the property, not including legal and other fees, he said.Once the family gains title to the house, the plan is to gut it and rebuild. The Girards also have a two-bedroom bungalow on the property which needs improvement and is now rented. Carol Girard has asked the renters to leave, so volunteers can clean up the cottage and she can live there with her family until the main house is rebuilt. She now is living with her mother in a house about 30 minutes away.Kevin McManus said he spoke with the Norwich Rotary and Mattern Contractors about handling the general contracting work.“I certainly know, one way or another, we’re going to follow through with this project,” he said. “And it will be completed. With or without the assistance of television.”Carol Girard said she cried through the entire video the first time she saw it Sunday. But she said it was important to her children also, because it contained images of their family together.“She got to hear daddy laugh,” Carol Girard said of Hannah, 7. “She got to hear daddy talk.”

PTI And ATH Go Black For The Week

i don’t have knowledge of if this is an experiment, or the network is trying to ramp up for the new sports center format in august, but today’s scarcity of pti and around the horn definitely caught me far-off guard. i tuned in for the duration of my nightly immovably forwarding, er viewing of ath and noticed a random sports center different with chris mckendry airing. my ahead thought was that something crazy in the sports world had gone down, but that wasn’t it. i next presupposed that i was on espn2 for some reason….nope. lastly, i figured that they had finally cancelled ath! no such fate.so what the heck was up? there hadn’t been an official throng unchain with reference to the “special” sports centers, but i figured i’d go in return and cessation. and there, buried in a week long “this week in espn” release (that mainly includes nascar news), was this tidbit….espn drive present a week of special united-hour sportscenter programs monday-friday, july 21-25, at 5 p.m. these sportscenters determination feature elements from different espn platforms, including espn radio, espn.com, espn the ammunition, espn fantasy sports and content from sportscenter. hosting the specials will be chris mckendry (monday), dari nowkhah (tuesday-thursday) and josh elliott (friday). around the horn and allowance the interruption will return monday, july 28.i also did some searching and found this little message from michael wilbon encircling halfway in every way the 5pm playing….hmmm. that’s inquiring isn’t it? since when does a upstage that replaces both of its patron hosts with random people on a regular principle take a hiatus? tony kornheiser has been absent for weeks from pti and that press liberation is dated today. i’m not prevalent to write a ton of conspiracy theory type guesses about things (you’re appreciated to do so in the comments), but just in case someone is reading…..two hours of sports center in the evening is waaaaay too much. Hades an hour is too long, but let’s just focus on this “special” sports center.chris mckendry honestly counted down plays #50-41 of the “year so far”. no no….not baseball. the inviolate year of 2008. tom brady to hot moss in the super bowl was #48 and josh hamilton’s hr derby performance was #49 (which isn’t even technically a “play”). i’m not sure what the experiment is, or what is going on, but i’m not a fan. i need dan lebatard talking about david hasselhoff’s crotch every night or i’ll go zealous.it’s an exciting voice to say the least, and i’ll try to stay you updated.

Numbers, please
In addition to coming up with a uniform design, the Oklahoma City Meteorological Phenomenon management has to assign numbers to the new guys. There’s an unwritten tradition that says you keep your old number from the last place you played, but this doesn’t necessarily apply to rookies. Still, let’s see what we can do:
Russell Westbrook: Wore #0 at UCLA; he’ll probably do so again at OKC, though the big goose-egg is nowhere near as popular in the NBA as it is in college ball. (The Wizards’ Gilbert Arenas, aka Agent Zero, is the one man to flaunt his cipher these days; Robert Parish’s double-zero hangs from the rafters in Boston.)

DeVon Hardin: Unsigned as yet. Wore #35 at Cal; in OKC this belongs to Kevin Durant, so if he comes on board he’ll be assigned something else.
Serge Ibaka: Unsigned as yet. Didn’t play US college ball. I expect him to be playing in Europe this season.
C. J. Miles: Assuming he jumps from the Jazz, where he wore #34, OKC can accommodate him with the same number.
I am thinking it might be bad form to use any of the Sonics’ retired numbers (1, 10, 19, 24, 32, 43), at least until Seattle is back in the league.

Interview: Greg Weisman Talks ‘Gargoyles’

when i was younger, there was a disney cartoon that my friends and i loved and which impressed our parents with its fullness and layered story-telling. the series was called gargoyles, and it told the story of a clan of warrior creatures from 10th century scotland who are brought to new-day new york city via magical manipulation. led by the high-class gargoyle goliath, the creatures find themselves to be strangers in a rare touch, forced to lie low while trying to consider their new locale in the 20th century. in short order enough, they wind up becoming superheroes, protecting the word-for-word humans who either fear them or don’t into they exist.
Although the series lasted only two seasons (followed by the short-lived Goliath Chronicles series, which is considered apocryphal), its fan base remains extremely loyal — so much so, in fact, that a convention for Gargoyles fans, called the Gathering of the Gargoyles, has been held each year for more than a decade now. In recent years, we’ve seen much of the television series finally released on DVD, and Slave Labor Graphics has begun publishing an ongoing Gargoyles comic book series and spin-off miniseries, Bad Guys, headed up by series creator Greg Weisman and picking up where season 2 left off.
I spoke with Weisman (who also serves as story editor for the new Spectacular Spider-Man animated series) during the most recent Gathering of the Gargoyles event, and we chatted about the clan of winged Scottish warriors that he created so long ago and what the future holds for them.
COMICMIX: So, we’re at the 12th annual Gathering of the Gargoyles convention. You have the new comic book series from SLG and the Bad Guys spin-off coming out now. You’re even talking about future spin-offs. All of this says there’s a decent fan base. So what’s happening that we still only have the first 13 episodes of season 2 on DVD?
GREG WEISMAN: Well, there’s a lot of turnover at Buena Vista Home Entertainment. You’ll have people there who are interested in the project and then you’ll have new people come in who aren’t so much. The ugly truth of it is that Season One sold very well, and the Season Two, Vol. 1 DVD did not sell so well. Even if, ultimately, it sold as well as the first season, we sort of lost Disney’s attention. So we need to get their attention all over again, and the best way to do that is by making sure that we continue to sell the DVDs that exist, show them that the comics are selling well. Gargoyles is SLG’s best-selling comic.

larry lebowitz explains what’s going on on i-95 in miami:
mayhem.tumult.chaos.my good SW compadre, mr. thesaurus, provides plentifulness of options to describe the near the start days of south florida’s experiment with variably priced toll lanes on interstate 95.the florida department of transportation, with a big push from the bush administration, is converting the loathed and subsumed under-enforced hov lanes into loathed but comparatively more enforceable high occupancy toll, or simmering, lanes.the variably priced tolls haven’t started, but the fun house kicked into high attire on friday after the dot and its contractors finished altering the lane configuration on at one of the region’s most heavily traveled corridors.south floridians reacted with typical understatement and grace. certain, there were rollover accidents and med-evac airlifts, serious injuries and voluminous property damage. but there wasn’t one report of express-lane inspired gunplay.not yet, anyway.anybody remember the shifted movement lanes on us 1 back in the 1990’s? yeah, that worked, too.in the interim, the dot offers some helpful tips on how to make out the change.ht to sfdb for the picture.
